Review of The Party

The Party (I) (2017)
7/10
pretty funny, great performances

This is new. My ratings are usually never higher than the average score, but I'm a little disappointed that most people don't particularly like this film. I thought it was quite funny, and as far as kitchen-sink plays go, pretty entertaining. Never been a big fan of theatre but this felt like watching a play on film and it was a nice experience. I love watching drama unfold, reason why some of my favourite pieces of media are stuff like 12 Angry Men, Succession or Dog Day Afternoon. I like dialogues and I like watching conversations more than action, so this was right up my alley (and the fact that Cillian Murphy's in it helps vastly). I'm not saying this is anywhere near something as great as 12 Angry Men, but the black and white filter, heated dialogue exchanges and fixed location kinda reminded me of that. Although I personally liked this film, I can understand why someone else wouldn't. I don't think satires are many people's cup of tea, especially when it's a film where nothing's really going on.

Now for what I didn't like. The filter. I like black and white films a LOT but the lighting in this film was weird. Also it felt like a very cheap instagram filter was used, they didn't adjust the brightness and shadows and stuff, that's why it looks awful in certain scenes.

As for the acting bit. Even though I tend to dislike theatrical performances and this had that touch, I was still able to have fun, so that's nice.

Overall, not a waste of my time. Good film.
