Warning: Spoilers
A narrow-minded pater familias is continually thwarting the ambitions of his children. Wanting to drown his sorrows, his eldest son visits a pub called "The Dolphin", where he meets a number of lowlifes. It leads to a dangerous connection with the unfaithful wife of a drunk...

"Pink String and Sealing Wax" is a well-made mix of drama and thriller. Judging by modern standards there is little overt sex and violence, but the movie is quite good at conjuring up an atmosphere of creeping, insidious depravity. The characters are interesting, the performances are good and the fine sets and costumes help to establish a strong sense of the past. Lovers of the opera will be delighted to discover a scene devoted to the great Adelina Patti, one of the musical superstars of her time.

Nowadays many people call for the return of the good old-fashioned values in education : strict parenting, unassailable paternal authority, intensive moral instruction, religious upbringing and so on. There's a lot to be said for such goals but proponents may want to take a look at "Pink String" too, for its portrayal of a family blighted by a narrow-minded and judgmental father who wields near-absolute power. After a while his children begin to lie, to conspire and to keep secrets, since this is about the only way in which they can safeguard their sanity. The warning is well worth pondering.
