Dark Angel (1990)

Some cheese for the 80's action fans
8 January 2023
If you go in with the right expectations, it can be an enjoyable ride. And don't think about logic or proper police procedure when watching an 80's movie. You're missing the point. Here are the good things:

  • Despite what others say Dolph Lundgren doesn't give a bad performance. He's charismatic enough for the role and he even has a few decent one-liners. It's a classic buddy-cop-movie but the chemistry between Lundgren and Brian Benben works.

  • The pyrotechnics are great in this movie, lots of things get blown-up in a big old fashion and sometimesit looks like they used too much kerosine in a good way.

-Although the alien guys looked very simple in terms of make-up it was impressive how much they did just by placing the camera, so that they look very imposing in every shot.

And here are the parts that were a bit lacking: -The mob guys, are very over-the-top and I wish they would have done something more interesting with them. Especially since the movie starts with them, we never get a satisfying resolution.

-The fight scenes are pretty lame, you can tell that Dolph Lundgren has martial arts skills but the crew doesn't know how to use him, There is almost no choreography and he doesn't have a signature move or anything else that distinguishes him from any other schmuck that wanted to become the next action star (Van Damme had his splits, Segal had Aikido etc...).

-the plot and visuals borrow from a lot of movies, especially the Terminator, but there isn't really a great set piece to remember the movie by. Especially the showdown at the factory. The setting was as bland as it could be when you compare it to the ending of something like Highlander.

-It was never really clear how the alien weapons worked, they always aim straight at their targets and the weapons annihilates ANYTHING BUT the intended target. Stuff would always blow up around the heroes and it took out a lot of tension.

-The love story is pretty half-baked and probablly only existed to fill up the expected 90 minutes.

It's a movie doesn't hold up as good as The Terminator , but people who like that one or The Hidden, it is a fine enough movie to entertain the 80's lovers out there.
