Oh, Carmela! (1990)
6/10
Decent allegory of the Spanish republic
17 December 2022
A couple of traveling comedians and their mute helper roam through the war-ridden Spain of the 1930s. The movie is an adaptation of a play, which I rarely find a successful maneuver because of the stage restraints that are carried over.

Indeed the movie is barely entertaining, as we see Carmen Maura, that is Carmela, that is the Republic, being groped by men too busy with their little lives to see the greater cause. The fascist regime triumphs as the helpless people of Spain mourn on the grave of the Republic, only to resurrect 40 years later with Franco's demise. Not the best historical movie, not the best tragicomedy, but somewhat enjoyable.
