Sonic Prime (2022–2024)
7/10
Good show, but some improvement would be nice.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay so I am a fairly big Sonic fan, so I was intrigued by this show during the pre-release.

From the trailers, I wasn't too invested in all of it. I thought some of the dialogue was off, and characterisation (which I'll get to later) wasn't fully there for me, but I was still somewhat looking forward to it.

Okay so, before I go in with all my problems/criticisms of the show, I did quite enjoy it. I thought the plot was good, the characters were all mostly good (my favourite was Deep Knuckles from the last arc). I thought the voice acting was really well done, Sonic and Deep's VAs were standouts, (not to mention Jackscepticeye). The general feel of the show was good enough for me. The action was great.

Okay, so: my problems.

I really didn't like Sonic in this. He was bearable enough, but sometimes it felt like he was so stupid for no reason. He also has the 'attitude' thing to him, which mind you, I'm not fully against. Fleetway Sonic has a big attitude, but there I felt like it was pulled off better. This Sonic feels like he was a mix of the 90's and 2010's Sonic (both being the western versions), which I'm not really the biggest fan of. (Back to a previous point), he also felt too stupid. Like, the whole plot happens with the multiverse because he was too stupid. And yes, 'it's because he can grow later and learn from his mistakes' (said the fictional person who is also me), but I don't think it was handled that well. He also doesn't realise he is in another universe, despite there being several points indicating that. Sonic is smarter than that, and this has happened before! In Secret Rings and Black Knight, he realised he was in another world/universe very quickly. I am glad this problem went away later on, but my god is it annoying.

Speaking of characters-Shadow.

Well, I am somewhat happy, that since Sonic is kind of a stupid head, Shadow is somewhat reasonable and competent here, but, they are still using the whole 'I'm edgy and I beat people up' shtick they've been doing for a while. I am aware that SEGA mandates are preventing Shadow from being anywhere near how he should act in most situations, but it's still really annoying.

I think with all that, the show was still quite good. I liked the settings and variations of characters. I was sad Eggman (the main one from the main/original universe) never turned up after the first episode, but oh well.

There is also another problem (somewhat unrelated), which is nothing to do with the show, this time Izuka saying that Prime is game canon and people thinking that prime is canon to the games. If people are confused about that, I think that prime Sonic is similar/has similar aspects to the game universe, not that they are the same canon, because that causes a lot of problems BEYOND BELIEF. It's like how Sonic X has similar aspects to the game canon (a LOT more than Prime does), yet there are enough differences to distinguish the two canons apart.

Okay thank you for reading, stay safe.
