Muchi studio was led by the legendary manga cartoonist Osamu Tezuka, he set up a skilled team who had Eiichi Yamamoto, often adapting some western tales to widescreen, all them a successful at box office, then Tezuka proposes a hard endeavor to take ahead, put into production the French novel wrote by Jules Michelet's "La Sorcière" a soft-porn cartoon renamed as "Belladonna of Sadness", nonetheless it took them all surprise, even so they find a screenwriter to became it a bit light, thus the screenplay stayed pointless, it was refused by the Muchi's boss who demanded put the novel as wrote.

The storyline took place a mid-ages telling the sad story about a youth couple of Jeanne and Jean who asking for their Lord a consent to they marry, the Lord proposes ten cows for his approval, them Jean replays that have just one cow, due they are poor, the evil Lord takes his bride and deflower the virgin girl at night, return he at your groom in next day, since then Jean starts drinking and Jeanne is enticed by the devil himself, aftermaths Jeanne enters in the devil's behest.
The whole cartoon has a psychedelic style, flamboyant, and sexual oriented, spicy to put it mildly, just for specifics audiences whom like it, the picture stirred up concern among college's girls at Japan, it's sounds a bit hard to tackle at first glance, glamourous but in questionable taste.
