"I never welshed on a debt or a woman in my life"

Warning: Spoilers
A fairground barker Eddie Carter gets involved with Japanese agents seeking information about the Panama Canal prior to the attack on Pearl Harbour. He also gets involved with Peggy Harrison, a female agent for the American government. A pretty standard film involving lots of talk and not much action. Carter is played by Lee Tracy and though he has a nice smile he is mainly a dull leading man. Nancy Kelly fares better as dauntless agent Peggy and her death by heated cabinet is quite shocking. Good support is also given by Richard Loo, Phillip Ahn, Victor Sen Yung and Regis Toomey.

Apart from Peggy, Eddie is also killed. It was probably unusual in the time the film was made for the hero and heroine to be both offed but presumably a point was being made about the ruthless nature of the Axis agents. It makes for a downbeat ending for sure.
