Review of Rainbow

Rainbow (I) (2022)
3/10
Brilliant concept, boring film
7 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It is a Spanish re-imagining of a classic, Wizard of Oz, which in turn was a modern (at the time) re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland.

I was drawn to the intriguing concept and to the promo poster, but the film failed to immerse me into it's world or to entertain in any substantial way. Everything just felt luke warm and didn't live up to it's potential.

The film is composed in a Blues Brothers - esque style in the way it integrates music to create the world and transitions between scenes. It is also similar in the way that while the story follows a general theme, the individual scenes feels randomly cut together and seems to just happen.

It is always a let down when an "artsy" film escapes to the cliche of using drugs as a way to mask genuine imagination and creativity.

I waited for a grand finale with a smart plot twist or reveal, which never came.

The film tries to hide all of it's shortcomings with avant garde visuals, which actually is quite stunning at times. Effective use of CGI and good sound track. The cast was well selected with genuinely superb acting. It simply came down to a weak script that fell short of what you would expect from a film that affiliates itself with a classic.
