Review of Pearl

Pearl (2022)
6/10
Good But Not As Good As X
17 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Pearl, starring Mia Goth-Suspiria, A Cure For Wellness; David Corenswet-We Own This City_tv, Hollywood_tv; Tandi Wright-Alibi_tv, Jack the Giant Slayer and Emma Jenkins_Purro-The Brokenwood Mysteries_tv.

This is the second of a trilogy of films, with X being the first part and Maxxxine being the next installment. Actually, this movie-Pearl-is a prequel to X and tells the origin story of Mia/Pearl, the villain in X. This one starts in 1918 and Mia is living on a farm with her sick father and her strict mother, Tandi. You see early signs of Mia's fracturing personality with how she acts around animals and later, people too. All Mia wants is to leave the farm and become a star but her duties on the farm wont let her. David plays the local movie theater projectionist that shows Mia movies when she comes to town and Emma is Mia's sister in law that wants to help Mia in her dreams of becoming famous. Although Mia does an excellent job here-she has a real creepy psychotic smile-I liked X better than this one. FYI: Mia who plays Pearl in this movie also played Pearl in X-yep, the old lady-and will then play Maxxxine in the next movie. If you stay until after the end credits, you will get a teaser trailer for Maxxxine.

It's rated R for violence, gore and sexual content-including nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 42 minutes.

I don't think I would buy this one on DVD but it would be alright as a rental.
