Sr. Ávila (2013–2018)

Season 1 ... Does it get better? No, then avoid unless you like pointless torture and killing!

'Sr Avila' isn't without its merits, but there's only so much torture and killing you can stomach in one sitting. I was drawn to it because of Tony Dalton's Lalo in 'Better Call Saul', and he plays another violent character in this Mexican series, a hitman masquerading as a funeral director. Lots of 'kills', obviously, but the long drawn-out violent scenes could do with editing and better direction. We also don't get to know the other characters well enough to see they deserve to die, so the 'hits' often seem cruel and pointless. Not enjoyable, I kept thinking 'what's the point of all this?' I don't understand the high ratings, does it get better after Season 1? There are many good series that deal with gang and cartel violence. Try the Argentinian prison drama 'El Marginal', for example, gritty, violent, high end production values, and storylines that are a lot better thought out.
