Hannibal (2001)

Why didn't they focus more on why Hannibal is named "The Cannibal"?!
30 August 2022
I am relieved that they didn't decide to name this "Silence of the Lambs 2", because it misses any parallel with that must-see movie. Not having Jodie Foster in the main role - the FBI agent Clarice - also makes the viewing experience way different.

The choice to focus more on Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter in the sequel go Silence of the Lambs is a logical one. They however failed to take the opportunity to show the viewer why exactly Hannibal is called The Cannibal. Okay, at the end of the movie you get to see some of it, but you would expect to learn way more than that alone.

The writers also missed the opportunity to give the viewer a better idea on what exactly the FBI is doing in the Behavioral Science Unit. There was barely any interaction between Clarice and other FBI colleagues. That the public would want to learn more about exactly this FBI unit was seen by the huge success of the Netflix show Mindhunter.

Whereby Silence of the Lambs could potentially happen in real-life, the movie Hannibal is so fictive a scenario that it is impossible to ever happen. And this detach with reality also makes this movie not memorable. There are also no iconic or unforgettable scenes like we have seen in Silence of the Lambs. Maybe there are two exceptions though:

(1) a scene with a stairclimbing machine with an accompanied hanging. A hanging that was totally predictable a long time before it happened.

(2) the final scene at the lake house which you should just see yourself.

But in the end, I did not really enjoy watching this movie. I think it also suited more for people that also tend to like exaggerated action movies. Because this movie excels in exaggerating... Therefore I decide to rate this movie at 5.7 stars, rounded to 6 stars.
