Sissy Bogart Era Film - Up the River
11 August 2022
Yes, its true. After his run on Broadway as a sissy, (Tennis.,anyone?), Humphrey Bogart made a few sissy movies as a romantic lead. In this film, he is about as tough as ice cream left out in a Florida beach. The plot is cartoonish, and the major characters are underdeveloped. Tracy plays the most popular gangster since Capone (but we never find out why). Bogart plays a reformed one-time offender. Both are totally unconvincing, as is the romantic lead. The two had no chemistry, which is odd, since they wore good friends in real life. For film historians only, to show examples of how bad acting can develop into more productive careers later.
