Baretta was a tough as nails detective who played by his own rules, a maverick who would throw the rule book out the window to get the job done....
Just like a dozen other TV cop procedurals before this one and many after as well. It was already a worn out and tired premise when Baretta began and wasn't helped by the actor playing the main character. Robert Blake overacted in every scene...every single scene. And had so many loose screws rattling around in his head that he eventually destroyed his own career. He came across as over-bearing, insufferable and a bit insane in this series so, he was basically playing himself. It wasn't terribly entertaining to watch.
This was one of many police procedurals from the era and nowhere near one of the best.
