Warning: Spoilers
Delphine, whose vacation plan is abruptly cancelled by a friend is seemingly desperate to escape the cloudy weather in Paris and go on vacation with somebody, but despite arriving at several idyllic destinations, she ends up literally crying and running away, revealing her fragile and troubled state of mind.

"The Green Ray" refers to a phenomenon which can only be observed very briefly during sunset only on a clear day. This is an allegory to the emotional state of Delphine who is unable to escape her depressive state of mind despite being surrounded by kind hearted people who try to offer her companionship and advice to ease her loneliness and anxiety, until the end of the movie where she observes the Green Ray accompanied by a gentleman (Vincent Gauthier) and is finally able to experience true joy and companionship in the moment.

This film demonstrates Rohmer's astute understanding of the subtleties of depression and the esoteric psychology of human emotions.

Just like it is impossible to observe the Green Ray on a cloudy day, a depressed person might not be able to feel true happiness despite the best efforts of family and friends. But, ultimately, the clouds must depart to give way to a ray of hope.
