Review of Underwater

Underwater (2020)
6/10
Not quite the Abyss, but better than Leviathon

Underwater has the potential to be a really good movie, but something just felt off or missing. I think its missing a sense of purpose, and its also a bit rushed even with a standard run time.

The actors do a nice enough job. No characters are annoying. Even T J Miller keeps cool for his portion of the movie.

The sense of clostraphobia and being alone in the dark plays really well here. There's a suffocating feeling created throughout many parts of the movie. I give credit where its deserved in this case.

All things considered though, the movie just has an inadequate quality. Maybe the plot is undersold. Maybe the characters are underdeveloped. Maybe the protagonist/ monster relationship is paper thin. I'm just not sure where the movie falls short. It falls distantly short of the Abyss. I will say that of all of the Abyss copycats, this one might have moved to the top of that group.

Underwater isn't going to leave the viewer with much once the credits roll, but its still a good watch.
