Very Many Hollywood Cliches
16 October 2021
This is a very rare and extremely captivating idea - to depict a Hungarian bloody revolution of 1956. Did it work with the Hungarian film? In fact, not very much. Szabadság, szerelem, made in 2006, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this tragic event, has not persuaded us much. What could possible go wrong? Well, first, the performance of several main characters is deeply shallow, pun intended, as well as very amateurish. What makes this attempt of an epic drama even more painful to watch, is a blatant disregard to some details, as we can see terrible anachronisms here and there, and also, the very skewed depiction of Russian forces. The very Hollywood style of music / light / emotions depiction fails short since it is not made there, so a very visible ineptness arises. Battle scenes are good sometimes and often very unrealistic, with all this pretended seriousness and unreal explosions galore.

The sport sequence leaves much to be asked about, I am going to make spoilers here, as every attentive viewer will immediately notice some obvious mistakes and laughable inaccuracies.

It could be a very good war drama. Instead, it is more of a very biased paean of a dubious merit.
