Despite many reincarnations, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still the best film in the franchise. The script is cheesy (and a bit cringeworthy) but some of that is intentional. The premise is clearly an absurd joke, yet much of the plot is surprisingly measured. There are themes of family and neglect, genuine low points that create real stakes, and an earned ending that doesn't overdo it. The dialogue is hit-or-miss but the writing here does have strengths. Similarly, the acting isn't always ideal yet it lands the deeper notes.
Meanwhile, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is proficient from a technical perspective. The editing is energized without being exhausting. Interesting camera movements are peppered throughout (such as the arc shot that circles Raphael). The soundtrack shifts smoothly between upbeat and tense. The grungy production design is fitting and distinct. Lastly, Jim Henson's rubber suits are the highlight of the film. In the age of overused CGI, it is refreshing to see these elaborate practical effects. So, even though the corny script and inconsistent acting might hold Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back from being a bona fide classic, there is still enough here to be appreciated as an enjoyable flick.
