Not Funny, But GOOD!

I initially didn't like this movie on first viewing, as it's marketing makes it look like a great satirical comedy. And in a way, it is. Chris Cooper is great as a near clone of George W. Bush. And if Bush was never president, would be hilarious! But it's really more of a murder mystery ala Lone Star, And when watched again with that in mind, it's a MUCH better movie! A bit convoluted and drawn out in places as P. I. Danny (Danny Huston) is hired to find out if a corpse accidentally brought to shore by Senate hopeful Dickie Pilager (Chris Cooper) was actually a plant in order to give Dickie bad press and lose the election. Danny was a former reporter, and overly cynical and conspiracy minded. In questioning some of the supposed antagonists and agitators, Danny learns more of Dickie's family history and personal ties with a conglomerate tyrant. (Kris Kristoferson) But as Danny also learns more about the discovered corpse, a innocent Mexican migrant worker - it seems it has nothing to do with Dickie, politics, or any type of smear campaign? But when Danny is found out to have been a prior reporter, and asking a lot more questions around and learning more than he should, he becomes the biggest threat to Dickies running. As a 'dark comedy', it's almost TOO dark. I felt guilty for laughing the second time around, as it's too plausible in today's realm. As a murder mystery/conspiracy it's not bad. It weaves in and out of so many characters and history, it can be hard to keep up with. But I think what John Sayles was after was this quick, convoluted and complex journey which leaves the viewer to ask 'What was that all about?' And from leaving the nice simple serene world of fictitious Colorado in the theater and walking out onto the streets - THATS when it it hits you! "What's THIS all about?" So as a comedy, or mystery, or thriller it really isn't. But as a film makers concern and statement, it's one of John Sayle's best!
