Famous singing star Jenny Bowman (Judy Garland) is always performing around the world. While in London, she feels throat soreness and visits doctor David Donne (Dirk Bogarde). It turns out that they have a personal history. They have a son together but have kept her identity a secret from him. He's been told that he's adopted. She starts spending time with him.

Judy is older and this role has been tailor-fitted around her. She also looks frazzled and this would be her last film. One can certainly her style of all-out performing when she's singing. She's also doing power acting with the role emotionally. I'm sure that she's digging into some personal depths here. A lot of this boils down to her relationship with the kid. That's from where the drama has to rise. The kid is alright but he has only one speed. He's a puppy dog. He doesn't have another move or an emotional outburst in him. It's telling that their emotional climatic phone call has only her side of the conversation. The kid can't compete. This is fine. Overall, it's a necessity for Judy Garland fans.
