Review of Tyger Tyger

Tyger Tyger (2019)
3/10
Pretentious amateur mess

Don't be fooled by all the 9 and 10 star "user comments," which if you check, you'll notice are all written by people who "mysteriously" have never commented about another movie before--in other words, they're filmmaker friends, family and crew. This makes a stab at doing something offbeat, but is completely hopeless, given that there appears to be no real script, the non-actors can't improvise to save their lives, and frankly the level of sociopolitical commentary is well-intended but childish. It's as if the most burned-out people you met at Burning Man last year decided "Let's make a movie! We'll be our own cast and crew! And we'll make it about like a dystopian future where people like us are the cool Robin Hood types!!" I give it credit for at least trying to say something--however poorly and incoherently--but it really is just about unwatchable. And inept as the movie is, the level of pretentious self-importance is hilarious. I mean, the opening credits alone say "A Film by (the director's name)" THREE TIMES. Uh, we get it: You made this thing. You're an artist! Except most artists don't feel the need to sign a work umpteen times, as if the signature were more important than the work itself.
