Happy Anniversary (I) (2018)
7/10
A dramedy that tries to look at all sides
24 July 2021
I found this on Netflix and decided to give it a whirl, and honestly I liked it a lot - but it's got some problems. The primary issue with this movie is that it's just too short. Clocking in at 78 minutes, the first half is actually decently paced but the back half goes way too quickly. A lot of the movie is told through flashbacks, but the present day portion of the story only takes place across a single 24 hours. For the "journey" that the characters go on, this feels like much too short of a time span, but there's also just not enough screen time to fully justify the resolution that eventually happens.

One thing that I really loved about this movie though is that it attempts to review the relationship from multiple different angles. A lot of relationship movies will only go over the negatives or the positives, but this movie tried to show the couple at their worst and their best and I liked that a lot. Relationships are complex and messy, and this movie tried to capture that feeling. I thought the two main leads were really good as well, but they both have little side stories that feel a bit unnecessary. With an already very short runtime, devoting precious minutes to these seemingly random side stories feels like a waste of time.

Overall I did like the movie and would definitely recommend it, but it needed another solid 20 minutes to really flesh out this relationship and the journey that the characters go on.
