Very Good Swashbuckler
11 June 2021
Composite rating is too low. Why?

There are some great swashbucklers from the 30s and 40s, and several in the 50s particularly.

But in modern times, by comparison, very few.

My bias in 'Swashbuckler genre' taste here, I admit; is a good story line that includes a journey or two, and relies more on "fun & adventure" and less on drama and suspense, (although there must be some.)

As an example; Pirates of the Caribbean had some fun and hilarious parts in the 1st movie; but the sequels were dark & bogged down, a complete departure from the original (as well as the fun Disneyland ride they were modeled after.). Many viewers labored to get thru them. Almost 0 fun.

Story line on Cutthroat Island is pretty good and writing is satisfactory, but overall, it lives up to the "fun & adventure" criterion better than others. The 1991 Robin Hood-Prince of Thieves is a great movie for the same reason (and I'm a luke-warm fan of Costner, at best.).

Modine's character is likable (maybe lovable if yer a gal); and Geena Davis' performance is fairly inspired.

(Even with the treasure driven mistrust that you'd expect; I'd have written their mutual lust & love with MUCH more fire (and action for that matter); but that's just me. It certainly would've fit their aggressive, risk-taking personas. Ya don't wait till the end of the movie to (shall I say) consummate their mutual attraction. This isn't a Hallmark movie!!

They're pirates right? Courageous, notorious, and hedonistic pleasure seekers for Criminy sake!

Oh well!

Anyway, a good (fun) watch and maybe at least a biannual reviewing.

And that alone, earns at least a 7!

Thx
