Better Than Average Noir - Johnny Apollo

I like Tyrone Power as an underrated actor in Hollywood folklore. His best work, in my opinion, was The Razor's Edge, but he completed an impressive body of work that went well beyond B movies. This film, is among one of his better efforts, but the writing of the film leave a bit to be desired. The Lloyd Nolan character (and Nolan was a fine supporting actor) is rather shallow in the motivation area, as well as the stereotypical henchman he employs. The real problem with the film, other than the predictable Hollywood ending, is the premise that a life-long alcoholic kicks the habit in just a day or so, and the same character supposedly is willing to sacrifice himself for true love. Please. That is a bit too much suspension of disbelief for me. Other than those problems, the film is highly entertaining and watchable. That Johnny is such a good boy.
