Vanity Fair (2004)
6/10
Style over substance, panache over pizazz

This is visually stunning film, with lavish costumes, stunning sets, if just a little too perfect.

Though it is the films strongest appeal, it also lacks the grit and grime of 18thC Europe.

More talented reviewers than I have already explained why the story and characters appear convoluted, languid, lackadaisical and without appeal.

I'm reminded of 2006' 'Marie Antoinette' by Sofia Coppola, who is a genius at directing films of this genre.

Even though Marie Antoinette was not exactly well-received it works perfectly as a story about courtly intrigue, forbidden liaison', seduction, treachery, excess, and lust.

Perhaps if Ms Coppola were placed in charge of this film its rythym, themes, and characters may have meant more to the viewer.

I wanted to like this film, but 2/3 of the way in I simply wished for a tsunami.
