Starbuck (2011)

In Montreal , an immature man in his forties has many troubles including dealing with loan sharks. Then he must deal with the past when he was a sperm bank donor and learns he has hundreds of biological children many of whom are in a lawsuit to reveal his identity. He has the files on these children, now young adults, and has a transformation as he connects with some of them without revealing who he is.

The film has a lot of heart even though many situations seem implausible. One such implausible situation is the number of biological children. While it may be possible to suspend logic on this count, there are other situations that don't seem right including the story of a far-gone addict.

One of the film's stronger assets is the acting which is great overall. Even the brief roles are well played with much of that wonderful Québecois passion. The acting helps prevent some weaker elements of the storyline from falling into weak territory.

The subject matter of sperm banks is getting mileage now that so many children conceived this way are adults and seeking their paternal heritage. "The Kids are All Right" did a slightly better job than "Starbuck". But nothing on this subject could ever beat the best "Golden Girls" episode ever when Blanche's daughter arranged artificial insemination. - dbamateurcritic
