Review of Moon Zero Two

Moon Zero Two (1969)
5/10
Takes place this year.... 2021
7 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I would likely never have heard of this movie if it wasn't in a list of movies that supposedly takes place in 2021. I watched it in full on Youtube and it was much better than I thought it would be.

The director/screenwriters weren't sure what type of movie they wanted to make. A sci-fi adventure movie or a comedy. The billing as a western doesn't hold up all that well.

PLOT. The core plot is not bad and if they focused on that with some extra details, it would have been a better movie. Certainly the filler scenes with dancers etc could have been removed.

CHARACTERS. All of the characters are superficial esp the main villain. Hell he even wears a monocle. He has dull henchmen and a tech guy that is basically useless. Just like out of some early James Bond movie. The good guys are equally one dimensional.

SETTING. It was the setting that kept me interested. They seemed to have spent much time on envisioning what a city on the moon would look like and how shipping and mining might take place. Not the level of detail like you'd see in a thoughtful sci-fi but certainly more than you'd expect in a movie like this.

COSTUMES. Some costumes are just terrible but others are quite different especially for women. Thin space suits seemed practical. If you liked the odd fashions in the TV show UFO then you'll like this.

At times it wants to be a serious Sci-fi show but falls somewhere between UFO and the original Battlestar Gallactica. Also safe in that regard as there is only one kiss in the whole movie and a peck on the head.

Worth watching if you can view it for free.
