Review of The Beast

The Beast (2020)

Not really a beast
3 January 2021
With the recent resurgence of Italian crime dramas thanks to the like of Gomorrah and Subbura , Amazon and Netflix are taking advantage of their popularity and are backing films like la Belva ( The Beast) and I'm pleased they are .

This is the story of Riva , a gloomy, solitary war veteran, once Captain of the Army's special forces. Life and work have driven Riva apart from his family. His eldest son, Mattia, has never forgiven him while his daughter, Teresa, loves him unconditionally. However, a tragic event will force Leonida to transform into something he thought he had long buried in the past.

The Beast is an entertaining, revenge thriller without pulling up too many trees. It's violent, as you would expect but surprisingly slow paced . Fabrizio Gifuni who plays Riva is convincing as the PTSD suffering father , it's just a shame that the bad guys are a little bit stereotyped and unimaginative.

I found this entertaining but it's not a patch on some of the high class Italian drama I've seen in recent years .
