fictionalised anarcha-feminist take on the spanish revolution
1 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An almost twenty years old high-quality history-drama about the spanish civil war. It is especially centered around the "Mujeres Libres", the wom*n soldiers in the anarchist federations, the sexism from male soldiers trying to take their weapons away, or make them work back in "cooperative brothels" or as cooks. the story is mostly seen through the eyes of marìa, a nun whose convent is closed by anarchist militia men and seek refuge only to find herself trapped in a brothel, soon liberated by the Mujeres Libres. Smuggling in some weapons to the front, the group fights against he fascist troops, taking back one town, only to die as history knows at the hands of the fascists. the risk with historical drama is to forget that it always finishes badly, but in the mean time, this movie brings examples of anarcha-feminism and wom*n in the anti-fascist struggle, making it difficult to miss the relevance for our days.
