First and foremost, Equal is a poignant, edgy, and heartfelt series that fits nicely in the canon of excellent queer / civil rights docs like Celluloid Closet, Visible, Disclosure, etc. The editing, the archive, music choices and overall vibe feels contemporary and fresh and truly makes GREAT the hard task of telling stories that happened (I'm guessing) in a period without many photos, videos, etc. I think the lesser known stories (Jack Starr, Lucy Hicks, Jose Sarria) were passionately told and will inform people in years to come like they informed me. Oh, and I loved the pre Stonewall New York stuff -- truly a time capsule that I savored.
The cast is stellar and Billy Porter is a treasure.
