Review of The Orphan

The Orphan (2018)
7/10
Beautifully crafted and acted. This is reminiscent of Saturday Church with its fantasy cutaways.

A brilliant portrait of what it is like growing up gay with the yearning to be accepted, the rejection and policing of expression being compounded here as we observe, in brief, the life of a black effeminate orphan. The mixed race couple - coded as embodying progressive attitudes, including electing adoption over childbirth - are shown to regress back to the conservative attitudes of their society against queerness.
