Sia: Together (2020 Music Video)
4/10
Very much on the rise, but I don't like it (yet?)
17 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
These almost 3.5 minutes we have here are the music video for the song "Together" from Australian recording artist Sia. She is of course still really famous, so it is not a surprise that this one has already over ten million views on Youtube in under two months. The one you see on the poster here on imdb is Maddie Ziegler with whom Sia has collaborated so many times that the two are very closely connected to each other. I am okay with Sia overall. Some of her songs in fact I really adore. This is not one of them unfortunately, or at least not yet because frequently it takes me a little while to appreciate a song and I rarely consider something amazing after the first listen. Like it was the first listen for me here. So we will see. As of no I am not impressed though. This is an interesting project nonetheless. Apparently, this song (and music video) is closely connected to a new movie that Sia herself directed and co-wrote. We'll see how that goes. Not a rarity that we see actors go into filmmaking, but as for musicians, it is still fairly unusual. Some direct their own music videos, but that is basically it. So I will be curious to see if this film becomes a success for Sia. If so, then I would not be surprised if we see (and hear) this song at the next Academy Awards where it could get nominated. It is a pretty light number in fact, something like Pharrell's nomination you could say, but still obviously miles away from the success of the latter. This is also a key criticism for me though. Sia has a much better voice than we hear this time. And I don't really feel as if it is catchy enough. You can still check it out. With slightly over 200 seconds you cannot really do wrong too much. The music video is very fast, very bright, very colorful, almost psychadelic (as you can see on the photo here too), even if that was obviously not intended. If you take a look at the cast list here, you will also find some really famous names other than Ziegler. Oscar nominee Hudson and Golden Globe nominee Elizondo and Emmy winner Mary Kay Place are the best examples, even if I must say that if they were really included here, then it was just for a few seconds. They most certainly have more screen time in the movie. This music video is all about Ziegler and to a lesser extent Leslie Odom Jr. Alright, that is all that comes to mind here I'd say. This music video is part of an interesting project and I honestly hope that I liked the movie more than these 3.5 minutes we have here, but who knows, maybe I will actually appreciate the song and music video also more through the movie. As of now, I have to give a thumbs-down to "Together". Not recommended.
