Review of Ruby

Ruby (1977)
4/10
A film that ends in very abrupt fashion.

This film seems to be copying other films during its run as The Exorcist comes to mind and Carrie which Piper Laurie herself starred in and stars in this one. The movie though is a bit all over the place as the horror comes in spurts and it leaves behind many loose ends as the credits come in very abrupt fashion leaving you many questions behind. It is not all that bad, very tolerable to watch, but at the same time it is a bit unsatisfying and leaves you wondering why any of the supernatural occurrences even happened.

The story starts in the 1930's as a man and woman look to be about to have a romantic evening in a swamp. Before they can take the boat out upon the water, a car pulls up and some guys get out and gun down the man and the woman then goes into labor, pregnant with the man whose been gunned down child. 16 years later and the woman, named Ruby, runs a semi successful drive-in where she for reasons that are never clear to me, she has all the guys who gunned down her boyfriend working for her. Soon a force begins picking off her staff one by one and seems to hold a grudge, Ruby's mute daughter may hold the key, but seriously, if she loved that guy so much why employ her killers!?!

The film is saved a bit by Piper Laurie's performance as well as that of Stuart Whitman's, but not enough to ignore the complete and utter plot holes littered throughout the film. There are a couple of interesting kills that come by way of a supernatural type force, but not enough to make the film good. During the film, the movie played at the drive-in is Attack of the 50 ft woman, but the main brunt of this film takes place in 1951, before that film's release. Perhaps back in the day you could not worry about things like that, but these days it is an easy look up. Not a super bad viewing, but one that will just not satisfy in the end as the ending slams in your face!
