Von Stroheim would have had the marriage between Count von Hohenegg take place in a cathedral, witnessed by thousands of extras dressed in authentic garb right down to their monogrammed skivvies, but Julian makes it look as if it's taking place in a registry office in front of a dozen witnesses.
