A camp masterpiece
6 April 2020
Am I here to try and convince you that Godzilla vs. Megalon is a "good" movie? Most certainly not, because I'm not sure I could convince myself that Godzilla vs. Megalon is a "good" movie in the traditional sense.

What this particular installment in the Godzilla franchise does manage to be, however, is a very, very good time. And since I'm almost 100% sure the filmmakers knew they were making something ridiculous, I feel confident in saying this movie was a success. If they were sincerely trying to make something like the original Godzilla, or even something like the slightly more serious Destroy All Monsters, then yeah, I'd happily call this a flop. But I think they were going for camp; they were going for goofiness; they were going for child-friendly fun, and honestly I think it works for the child in all of us too.

As for the plot... there's an undersea civilisation, they want to wipe out humanity, they have a monster, then there's another monster from outer space they use, and scientists who've made a size-changing robot, who will team up with Godzilla to fight the more evil monsters... okay, it's insanity. But it's fun. Even the human stuff is quite enjoyable here, with a very silly spy movie tone, and some dumb but very enjoyable fistfights and car chases. And the climactic fight is... again, not technically great when placed up against even the other old, Showa era films, but it's so entertaining. Godzilla's final move needs to be seen to be believed, and honestly, his friendship with the robot Jet Jaguar is strangely heartwarming. This might be the most loveable Godzilla has ever been; I kind of want to hang out with this iteration of Godzilla to be honest.

And on the topic of Jet Jaguar: he's so dumb, but so awesome. Part of me wants to see him again, in a future Godzilla film, but maybe that's not necessary. Maybe one Jet Jaguar is enough. Oh, and his theme song is brilliant and iconic too, but that goes without saying.

Anyway, if you want a silly yet supremely entertaining Godzilla movie, this might be your best bet. It would crack my personal top 10 favourite Godzilla films, even though I recognise it has many limitations from a technical standpoint. It hardly matters though when the end product is so ridiculously enjoyable to watch.
