Wonderful wonderful show! The characters are fully fleshed out without stereotyping and the treatment of difficult issues is brilliant. These are real issues in East L.A. , where my family grew up. The discussions around controversial issues aren't preachy - they explore the different points of view and acknowledge that these issues are tough and that everyone has a good point. Gentrification, in and of itself, is a controversial issues. Yes, you want more money to poor communities, but these means bringing in different demographics which brings change that offends some people. But you can't have everything the same and make it different, really. Exploring the challenges of young Latinx people who are pulled between the past and the future is very real. The negative reviews here are people who can't relate and who don't want to try. This is basically the entire problem with our society. Do they have any idea how meaningless many of their favorite shows are to people living the reality in this show? But to me, there are archetypes who resonate. If you don't think you can relate, give it a chance anyway to see how many of us grew up and to understand the issues we struggle with. Great acting, btw. I love the dad, especially and the young chef.
