Too excessive
19 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
BEYOND ANARCHY is the fourth instalment of the DEATH RACE franchise and now bereft of any stars from the original, although Danny Trejo - who was in a previous one - has a small, "name", tacked on role. This time around the brooding hero is none other than Zach McGowan, who was excellent as Charles Vane in BLACK SAILS. He enters a walled wasteland to compete in an illegal tournament designed to rid the world of the evil masked Frankenstein. As per usual, it's a combination of extreme violence with the usual racing tropes and mayhem, shot deliriously and at speed. There's plenty of action and plenty of sleaze too, with random sex scenes and endless nudity as well as gory moments that go way over the top (including a literal chainsaw massacre). Danny Glover shows up in the old-timer role, perhaps inevitably. I found this one a little too excessive to be much fun, but perhaps I'm getting tamer in my old age.
