Hump and Spence's first movie!
23 October 2019
Did you know that both Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart made their film debuts in the same movie? If you like either one of them, you've got to check out the prison drama Up the River. Humph is handsome with a full head of hair, enjoys a romance and becomes a model prisoner. Spence has an enormous amount of conceit for his first movie, setting the precedent for insisting on first billing throughout his career and boasting he was always a bigger star than other actors. You'll also get to see Ward Bond as a tough-guy prisoner; he looks exactly the same in 1930 as he did in 1950!

Humph really shines in this movie. He's sweet and romantic, passing notes with Claire Luce, a female inmate in the neighboring women's prison. He believes in the power of second chances, unlike Spence, who has no intention of growing out of his hoodlum ways. Humph gets paroled before Claire does, and while he vows to wait for her, will their love stand the test of time? To find out, check out this obscure old flick.
