Review of Stealing Silver

"Stealing Silver" is an British live action short film from 2018 and at this point the most recent filmmaking effort by writer and director Mark Lobatto. Probably also his most known and the reason for that is certainly not really that the plot or direction are better or more interesting than the equivalent in his previous works, but that the main character in here is played by Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones. And as said series is moving towards its end, there is huge buzz and also other projects by the actors get a bit more attention again. Like this movie here. But it is not undeserving. Williams plays her part well and has solid chemistry with Ronald Pickup, who is also far from a nobody. Even Jemima Rooper will probably be recognized by some, so certainly a much better and more famous cast here than for most other short films these days. Let me say that I needed a while to develop an interest in this movie and the characters, but when they finally won me over, then I think it was a quality watch most of the time. I will not go too much into detail about the exact story now, but let me say that this is a touching and emotional movie and almost becomes too emotional for its own good at one point. I am not saying they failed or felt fake, but maybe they tried to get in too much here in terms of sob story and they certainly should not have kept it light(er), but sometimes less is more. But this is just a minor criticism, in addition to another that I did not like the way the female protagonist behaved towards that boy at the door and it also did not fit, almost felt like they did not want to take any tiny bit of attention away from Pickup to make sure we don't forget whho the one undisputed male lead in here is. Still, despite these criticisms it is the acting, the chemistry between the duo and also the locations and revelations that make this film work. I couldn't care less about Game of Thrones, never have, never will, but it is also not necessary to appreciate Maisie Williams in here and "Stealing Silver" as a whole. Go check it out, it's certainly a thumbs-up for me!
