Review of Talk to Me

Talk to Me (2007)
6/10
Timid, sugarcoated and sometimes a bit boring portrait of an african american radio dj, who was one of the first voices for the african american community in the sixties.

Don Cheadle plays an african american radio dj, who starts working for a radio station which used to have only white radio dj's. Based on a true story from the sixties. Will he be succesful or will he be ousted? That's the cliffhanger at first. Later on the movie, weirdly enough, starts evolving around a relationship, which seems to be a bit of an unnecessary side road.

Nothing is really wrong with this picture, but there is no real chemistry between the actors. None of the characters really butt their heads. Everything feels a bit timid. No real sparks. Don Cheadle isnt a leading character in my humble opinion, who can carry a movie by himself, although he doesnt do a a bad job, but I did get irritated about his silly moustache. I never like it when actors dress themselves up in a way that might be true to life, but nevertheless still looks quite silly. I had to watch that moustache the whole movie!

The story is about a black radio dj at a dominantly white radio station, who is talking to his african american listeners. That's all we get to see first. Later on there is some superfluous relationship talk with the radio dj's manager, which I really wasnt interested in. That story is not really a terrific set up for an enticing drama. It is therefore not a real drama, nor a comedy, it's a longwinding portrait of a time in which black people started the civil rights movement and this radio dj was one of the very few voices for the african american community.

That story did sounded interesting to me at first, but the execution is lacking in punch and I did find it a bit boring at moments. Could have been better.
