Big Time Tearjerker, But There's more to it
2 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Story of an ambitious young writer Ellen Gulden (Renee Zellwegger) who hesitantly returns home to care for her mother (Meryl Steep) who has been diagnosed with cancer. The relationship it appears has never been close between mother and daughter, especially when compared to her relationship with her father (William Hurt) a somewhat cold and distant professor of literature. As the film unfolds Ellen through caring for her mother and taking on her responsibilities begins to understand her better, as well as gaining insights into her own life.

The dynamics of the relationships are very compelling but strength of the film lies in the wonderful performances from Streep and Zellwegger, and a very good performance from Hurt as well.

Nice use of locations with small town Fall/Winter backdrop.
