Mabel's Strange Predicament is, well, strange...

Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit something when I watch one of these early Chaplin film shorts, I have a tendency to zone out from time to time. Not trying to be sacrilegious to Chaplin's legacy, it's just that I don't find them to be that enjoyable or entertaining. Granted, the early efforts of Chaplin as actor and director had to start somewhere, and with the advent of this relatively new medium, there were bound to be fits and starts. In this one, the Mabel character (Mabel Normand) finds herself inadvertently locked out of a hotel room after changing into a pair of PJ's. The pratfalls and chases that follow include Chaplin, the woman's suitor (Harry McCoy) and an assortment of hotel guests and employees who join in the frenzy that appears to be a hallmark of these early efforts. I'm sure audiences found it all fun when moving pictures were brand new, but they border on tedium if you watch any number of them in a row. Maybe that's the answer; check them out one at a time so as not to get over fatigued by the lack of any real story.
