Prue, Stella and Ag ....
27 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Prue (Anna Friel), Stella (Catherine McCormack), and Ag (Rachel Weisz) play the land girls in question, helping out on Mr and Mrs Lawrence's farm as bombs fall on nearby Southampton in 1941.

Most of the plot focuses on how the three girls respond to Joe, the Lawrence's son (Steven McIntosh) who hasn't yet signed up. It's interestiing to see how different the prospect of dating was for young men and women at the time and this is best represented in a scene at a dance.

Wartime inevitably brings tragedies. Anna Friel's performance as one befalls Prue is truly heartbreaking. It shows how harsh the male mentality towards war is compared with that of the female. "Silly, silly boy!" she exclaims more than once as the other girls silently bathe her.

After moving forward to later in the 1940s, the film fittingly ends on a black and white photo of the three girls as their younger selves on the farm.
