LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE is a different kind of thriller from gangster honcho Johnnie To, this time exploring the global financial crisis and its effect on various characters. The story plays out through linked sub-plots and characters in a way similar to the likes of BABEL, and truth be told, it's quite depressing. The realism is certainly key to this one but there's not a hint of happiness to be had in the tale of innocent people suffering at the hands of a system weighed to punish the poor and reward the rich. The cast do commendable jobs, but it's a little too near-the-knuckle to truly enjoy.
