Not without charm, this is an odd film from a maker of odd and idiosyncratic films.

Two surprises here before the tale is barely unfolded. Our 'hero', played by Randolph Scott extricates himself from a stagecoach in the middle of nowhere by threatening the driver with a gun and then stealing his rifle and firing into the air. Turns out this is to alert his far away partner who turns up with his horse, the coach continues its journey and as the two head for town we learn that the film's title refers not to some suspenseful ultimatum after all, but that Sundown is the name of the town. Initial surprises over the film becomes one of the strangest western I've ever seen. Scott was born in 1898 and here is approaching 60, he looks even older and plays the part of an aggrieved party with revenge in mind as he gradually unravels but in so doing helps everybody around him like you might expect to happen in a fairytale. Not without charm, this is an odd film from a maker of odd and idiosyncratic films.
