Incompetent street musicians, L&H prove adept at strarting a street brawl
12 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Like their previous film "From Soup to Nuts", this silent comedy short was directed by Edgar Kennedy, who was in some of their films, usually as a victim. What you will likely remember of this film is the terminal brawl, initially confined to the boys, frustrated at not attracting any donations for their terrible street music, with clarinet(Stan) and French horn(Ollie). Ollie starts off by tearing Stan's clarinet apart and throwing it away. Stan returns the favor by grabbing the French horn, and kicking it into the street, where it is promptly flattened by a passing steam roller. This is followed by them tearing up little clothes items off each other, and Stan kicking Ollie in the shin several times. A passerby also gets kicked, and reciprocates. Next, jackets and shirts get torn, and, as others are drawn into the fracas, finally, pants are torn off. The film ends with the boys somehow walking away from the carnage, fully dressed, apparently stealing discarded items. A fair number of their comedies ended in a brawl. For instance, in "Two Tars", it was auto parts, rather than clothes, that got torn off. I'm sure most children will find this brawl amusing, but I can understand some adults not being enthralled by it.......The film begins with the boys as part of an orchestra. We have to wonder how they got this job, they are so incompetent at playing their instrument, and at the choreography: When the others sit-down, they standup, and vice versa. Stan's music blows off his stand. When Ollie isn't looking, Stan steals his music sheet and puts it on his own stand, then tells Ollie that his music sheet blew to the podium floor. Ollie goes to retrive it, but the conductor is standing on part of it. He gets his fingers mashed several times, but eventually gets it. Back in his seat, he notices that this sheet is for a clarinet, looks over and sees his music on Stan's stand. They get into a fight, which results in their stands being knocked down, which has a domino effect. Now, they are fired, and, later that day, they will be kicked out of their rooming house for non-payment of rent. However, they get a bowl of soup before they leave. Stain again makes a problem by unscrewing the tops to the salt and pepper shakers to get a little salt or pepper. But, he doesn't screw them back on. Ollie turns them upside down over his soup and gets nearly the whole contents in his soup. Then, they try to make a few coins by playing as street musicians. But, there are no takers, and a street cop bothers them for not having a license. They move on, and have several manhole incidents before destroying their instruments.....See it at YouTube.
