Straight Storytelling Exceeded My Expectations
6 September 2018
This mini-series ended up better than I thought it would. After the first hour, I thought it was going to be more tabloid than substance, but it soon went past that and it became the gift that kept giving. I found a lot of it interesting given the fact that I was familiar with a lot of the incidents displayed in the biopic. The one thing I was most impressed with was the fact that the actors (playing celebs like Bobby, Whitney, Janet, etc) weren't doing 'impersonations' of the people they played. They just played it straight, which was very effective. Not sure if it was intentional, but it actually draws you in more to the situations and actions of the lives being portrayed. It made me care about them as people, more so than tabloid fodder. The acting, stylized direction and fast paced story telling turned this in to must see TV. BET promoted this a lot throughout the summer and I congratulate them on their promotion of it. It was definitely worth the hype and delivered. Mr. Brown's story has a lot of sad and tragic moments, but it also shows a balanced look at all of it. It doesn't paint him as a choir kid. He is definitely a grown man and I applaud his not sugar coating his life story. Bravo!
