Warning: Spoilers
I cannot say enough bad things about this movie. Hands down one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. After thirty minutes of pure bore, I should have just shut it off. I kept mistakenly hoping it was going to get better but it never did, it only got worse. I never thought a movie with so many great actors could be such a steaming pile.

Two many characters, not enough going on. And the stuff that is going on is just appalling and creepy. I cannot understand all of these glowing reviews. To me, this movie felt like a "guy flick" and I found myself growing more uncomfortable and angry as the minutes ticked by. I have never watched a movie before where I could not relate to a single character and where I could not find something to like about any character as well. I honestly hated all of them and wanted to reach into the TV and slap them.

It's hard to say which character or plot line is worst in this movie. Timothy Hutton is the main character and is like a 40 year old man in real life playing a 29 year old and it shows. He abandons his stable gf in NY to visit his depressed family and immediately falls for his...wait for it...thirteen year old neighbor, Natalie Portman. At first I was hoping they were going for like a father figure thing, but if I had known how creepy it was going to progress, I would have shut the movie off immediately. Where the hell were this girls' parents the entire time? No one saw this creepy 30 year old man constantly talking to her and following her around town?? I am appalled to see how many reviewers thought that this plot was beautiful. Criminal is the word you are looking for.

Matt Dillon is then the worst character, cheating on his beautiful gf who has become anorexic as a result of his blatant cheating on her. He is cheating on her with Lauren Holly, his old high school flame who is married with a little girl. It's hard to believe that so many despicable people are from the same town and all know each other. His gf Sharon is pathetic, making excuses for him and blaming herself, even throwing him a birthday party despite his neglect of her. Worst part is, she actually forgives him in the end and takes him back. I know we are supposed to believe that after getting his butt kicked by Darian's husband that he has learned his lesson but I don't think he has.

All of the other characters are just useless and barely worth talking about. Uma Thurman is one of my favorite actresses and even she could not save this movie. Her character was completely needless and stupid and it really pains me to say that about her. She was some random guy's cousin and she stupidly agrees to go out ALONE with one of the main characters despite the fact that she has a loving bf. She then gets mad when that character tries to kiss her and storms out. She then agrees to go out ALONE with another one of the main characters who says inappropriate things to her in an ice shed and instead of being scared she simply laughs like a moron. She then disappears, having added nothing to the story at all except confusion.

The only character I actually felt bad for was Tracy, the gf of Hutton who has no idea that her bf is chasing after a 13 year old girl and just hit on Uma Thurman's character repeatedly as well. She also doesn't know that he just tried to kill four men by plowing a snow plow repeatedly into their car like a lunatic. Is this some kind of renegade town where there are no rules or laws? This movie is from 1996, what time period is this supposed to be? They ALL would have been arrested.

Any time Rosie O'Donnell started to talk I got a headache. I see what she was trying to say about these men, but I do not think any of them deserved love or wanted it. They were all lost causes as far as I'm concerned. I know that all of the creepy and confusing things that happened to them throughout this long drawn out mess were supposed to "change" them but I just didn't see it. It should have had less characters and more interesting things going on.

I do NOT recommend this movie, especially not to women of any age. This movie is full of ancient alpha males and unintelligent women who put up with them for some reason.
