Review of Mickey

Mickey (1918)
8/10
Spunky and not hysterical, funny and sympathetic, I liked Mickey as written and performed.

The film kept my interest as to her fate and I especially enjoyed her antics and energy at the finale in the large abandoned mansion with the steepest pitch ever. I liked how she bloomed where she was planted, in among a greedy family who were mean and dismissive of her in turns. The mining beginning was fun, with Minnie HaHa especially good in her role as surrogate mom. The plot held up as Mickey's surrogate dad tried to do his best by his charge, who admittedly played pranks and seemed to outgrow her rural roots.

The bit with feeding the donkey at the mine was funny; less funny was thinking her 'dad' was going to beat her with that strap. So, all in all, fun plot and performances, lots of action. In the beginning, maybe a few sequences were missing? The film could use an intertitle or two to clean up the plot point of why exactly taking her 'dad's hat led to him falling down a well.

Oakman came across just dandy as a professional man in need of more than a greedy fiancée he simply couldn't bring himself to ditch. I hope he and Mickey found happiness.
