Review of Mamaboy

Mamaboy (2016)
7/10
Personally I found the Film interesting for what it was aiming for.

Mamaboy tells the story of our main protagonist Kelly Hankins as he discovers the trials of what pregnancy brings to the table and how it effects his life. And truth be told I found myself to like this film, yes despite the premise of being a Male getting pregnant (something that would turn people away) I think what it does with the concept of pregnancy itself makes it enjoyable despite that. I will say, yes I'm sort of in for seeing a Male get pregnant and clearly people who are into that will enjoy this film, however those who are turned off by the concept won't like this film and it does have its criticisms. Yes the experiment is very silly.

Despite the premise that is basically Mpreg, what I like about this film is that it tackles the very issues of what experiencing pregnancy really is like, Kelly's condition isn't exaggerated or over the top, he goes through actual struggles of pregnancy and how it effects his life, it makes his experiences in this film a bit realistic, because pregnancy at teenage years really does tamper with your grades, it can throw struggle on your personal experiences, the scene that hits home with this was Kelly losing everything, his peers, image, car and job, it's the experience of pregnancy through a different perspective (Male instead of Female) giving the Male their own perspective of the experience showing its not cut and dry. Kelly even gives the reaction a Male would normally, having being a Male himself, and of course being a teenager struggling with his situation proves it was more than what he thought, and at that age real teens think they can handle it but can't.

As for the characters, this is where things become hit or miss. Kelly himself is fine as a character, though the film is more about his experience overall. As far as Comedy goes the real comedic parts come from Nurse Zelda and the Principal, who were really the best characters in that regard. The one character I truly don't like was Kelly's brother Jimmy Hankins, he's such an annoying twit and his scenes with Kelly were pretty bad, especially when he Blackmails Kelly's car away from him and generally treats him badly, and he never gets punishment for anything he does, (mainly Blackmailing Kelly's car and telling Milton Kelly was pregnant) he's far too unlikable for me. The mom also wasn't given much screen time.

I also found it weird how nobody aside from the few characters that did know, caught onto the fact Kelly was pregnant, the signs weren't exactly hidden very well, all they think was he was fat, but they don't catch on that he's pregnant until the end. But despite this I liked the film, yeah it has its problems and it really isn't for everyone, as people who aren't into the concept of Mpreg alone will hate it, but looking past that I thought it was an alright film, one of the better perspectives that tackles a Male being pregnant.
