The problem comes with the way the characters interact, In a nutshell... nobody, and I mean Nobody talks like that. Every line is trying to be witty and cultured. Every 2 sentences the characters reference authors, painters and are more worried about showing their general culture and their art nuance that to actually communicate.
The acting is forced, but is not due to the actors, which in other media can and have delivered, but more due to the poor script and more than likely the fact than the director is also the writer.
